maytag A 5000 washer fills wont agitate

fills then stops emits smell of belt slipping it does spin & empty

Remove the front panel and check both belts. Check the pump belt tension as described in the Service Manual (page 3-31). Remove both belts and check if they are glazey on the sides and/or leaving a black marks on your hands, then most likely they are worn out.

Turn the transmission pulley CW to check if it’s locked up. If it is, then the transmission has to be replaced.

Pulled up this thread. I have a 21 year old A5000. It fills w/ water, but does not agitate. I pulled the front panel, but I do not see any belts. I reached underneath the front and got black from the belt on my fingers. I turned the belt and the transmission turned ( if the transmission is the part underneath the tub). Do I need a belt?

Hello,

Use the troubleshooting instructions from the previous post. If you will decide to replace a belt, then you have to replace both of them at the same time.

Here are the breakdown diagrams and http://www.appliancepartspros.com/parts-for-maytag-a5000.html

Gene.

I just replaced both belts, and the pump is pumping but no agitating. I can smell rubber burning, but no smoke. The troubleshooting link will not open.

Did you do it?

Gene.

Yes! It turned. And the washer ran yesterday. I am at work now, and my wife calls me and says she smells burning rubber. I’m thinking its still the old rubber in the pulleys. Anyway, do you know the timing of events? ( fill, circulate, agitate)

It filled yesterday, then the motor turned the pump, & then it started to agitate. Is this correct? How long should the pump run before it begins to agitate?

…then the motor turned the pump…

What did you mean? Did it drain at that time?

Did you adjust the pump belt tension after you replaced the belts?

Gene.

The belt adjust itself. It worked fine today on Permanent Press cycle.

Even if you do think so, it’s better to verify it as described in the earlier attached instructions.

Gene.

Gene, The service manual link will not open. I would love to look at it.

You do not need the service manual. On 01/03 I posted the instructions on how to adjust the pump belt special for you.

Gene.

Sorry Gene. I just saw the link. I’ll check that tomorrow.

Thank you!

Gene, Sorry to get back so late. Adjusted the belt and all is well. My wife says she still smells rubber from time to time.

Ask your wife to decrease size of loads.

Gene.

Will do! I sure appreciate you and my local appliance parts store!

You are welcome.

I continue to have this issue. I have slid the pump as far as it can go to tighten the belt. It works for a while and then stops agitating. In can turn the transmission pulley both ways. If I have the machine running when it is supposed to agitate, I cannot turn the transmission. If I create tension on the belt by holding the motor from moving towards the transmission, the transmission tries to rotate clockwise and the motor gets in a bind and won’t turn. Thanks!

So can you turn the transmission pulley CW or you can not? I’m a bit confused.
