Maytag atlantis is not agitating

Agitation with grinding noise. Spins great. I think it may be the transmission. I am handy with tools but this seems beyond me. Is it worth having repaired or should I just look for another washer? I checked what I think is the pulley. Removed belt and turned wheel cw and agitator moves. Could it also be just the plastic agitator that is stripped?

Its cheaper to have a ********** repairman come out and fix it, for 227.00 this includes parts and labor and they will give you a year warranty on the machine after they fix it, if the repair is more than 500.00 they will ask you to pay the difference or they will give you 500.00 towards a new machine. I did alot of research and had my machine apart, thought it was the thrust bearing kit, but that was not the case. My Maytag Ensignia is doing the same thing, and its the transmission, grinds when it agitates and will stop after about 30 seconds to a minute of real harsh grinding and will stop and you hear the motor hum at a stand still until it just overloads and shuts down. Tranny’s kits run 234.00 plus shipping alone so I think 227.00 for the repairman to do this is a bargain, he comes between 8am and 1200 noon on 1-25-12, I will post results after he leaves tommorrow.

Thank you double k. I have a call into a local appliance repairman who has done work before at my home. I appreciate your post and look forward to you post after the repair. Good luck.
