My Maytag Ensignia Washer would not do anything except make a humming noise and produce some kind of electrical smell. It was full of water and clothes when the problem was found (left there by college son when he left). We took the clothes out, let it sit for at least a day, and tried to spin the water out. The spin setting drained all the water miraculously. We then started a new cycle with nothing in it and it seemed to work. Over the past week or two it has been making a grinding sound when agitating. I think it may be the transmission seeing as how the drum wobbled when it worked and another site referenced the transmission. Is that part still under warranty? Is that the problem?
We have had three college sons, and each has gone through a washer. Is there is pattern here?
It sounds very much like a transmission failure, and I cannot find anything to indicate there is warranty coverage beyond 1 year, but if you want to confirm check with Maytag customer service.
You can look at the service manual,
http://www.servicematters.com/maytag_library/docs/16026502.pdf
but getting into this is not something I recommend, and you need special tools, and I don’t think it is an economical repair when you can get a basic top loader for less than $350 including tax and delivery in our area.
Finally, although we would all like to blame the college son (it just feels right to do so), he was probably not responsible here.
Good decision, hope it works out for you and thanks for the update.
