maytag atlantis timer problem

Replaced timer switch due to increasing difficulty starting dryer. Unit now starts easily when knob is pulled but timer will not advance from any position (worked perfectly prior to repair). Installed another new timer and still same problem. I have verified part # against model mde8400ayw and serial # 19466350cg. All other features on the dryer work fine.

HELP

Here are your parts, includes a wiring diagram.

I am assuming that it does not advance in either timed dry or auto modes.

You will see that the one side of the timer motor is connected to the Electronic Dry Control board so that is your likely culprit.

Thanks for your response, I replaced the pc board for the dryness sensor and still have no timer advance. Is there something else to look for???

Are you sure it does not advance in timed dry?

If it does then the problem may just be a dirty moisture sensor (see Item 6 in Section 8).

Clean them with a damp cloth being sure to dry thoroughly.
If that does nothing try isopropyl alcohol or electronics contact cleaner, just be sure all the solvent vapors dissipate before trying.

The way is works is that when clothes are wet there is moisture between the strips, this allows a small electrical current to flow. The board monitors this current holds the timer motor off.
When the clothes are dry the current stops and the timer advances.
So any dirt etc. between the strips will fool the unit into thinking the clothes are still wet and he timer will not advance.

Thanks again for the info. I will take the sensor out tonight and clean it.

You should be able to clean it without removing it from the unit.

If that does nothing then I would remove it just in case there is something across the connections at the back.

I replaced the sensor with new—there was accumulation across the back but I still have the same problem. I have no timer advance in any mode. I have now tried a third new timer switch and still ng. Is there a fuse somewhere on the unit that could cause this?

This thing is becoming a royal pain in the you know what.

The only fuses I see that could cause it to not advance would also stop the motor from running.

The wiring diagram included with the parts is poor quality and I cannot find a better copy anywhere.
I cannot tell in timed dry where the timer motor is supposed to get it’s power from as the timing chart is illegible.

Here is a shot in the dark, see the attachment.

Perhaps start a new thread with the problem and what you have doe so far.
Who knows someone else may have seen this or have access to a better wiring diagram.

The only reason I say to start a new thread is that we need some new ideas/input.

thanks again for your info. if i get this figured out i will let you know what it was.

I spoke with an appliance repair tech regarding this timer because not solving this is annoying me nonstop. He claims that the problem is I have the wrong replacement timer and he has seen this in the past. I told him I verified the model and serial numbers on three seperate orders. He claims there are 3 switches that all look the same. In your opinion, is this possible?

The bulletin I included earlier does seem to show that there are at least 2 revisions.

Try a new post as we definitely need more input on your problem.

You could always reference this thread by using the Insert Link.

I am having the same exact issue. I replaced the timer since it wasn’t advancing and it blew the 3 light board. I have replaced the 3 light dryness board, the timer, and the dryness sensor. Timer still does not advance the dryness board is blown with black spot on it. I have model MDG8400AWW series 19. Did you ever get any resolution to this problem? I wonder if I need a different timer as well.

We have a MDE8400AYW with the timer that does not advance and read about the problems with this model and timer switch. The 3 timer models generally correlate to the serial numbers, but not 100%. There are series 10, 16, and 24 which is the first two numbers of the serial number; I believe that there was a series 19 that is to be considered a series 24 for timer replacement. I have also read that any number over 16 is considered a series 24. Unfortunately, this model was one in the crossover stage after Whirlpool bought Maytag. We have Maytag dryer MAV9504EWW and the new transmission only fits if you also replace the connector to the tub; which Maytag will not pay for unless you make a stink at corporate.

Back to the MDE8400AYW, apparently some of the series 24 models used leftover series 16 wiring harnesses. The best way to check is to get the number off of the wiring harness tag; that will tell you which series timer it hooks up to. Mine was a series 16 even though my serial number starts with 24.

As I have read elsewhere, you can’t blame Maytag for using perfectly good wiring harnesses; but, there should have been some major notation in the repair manuals and forwarded to the parts websites. Maytag should divulge this immediately to anyone calling in wanting information on this dryer/timer repair.
