maytag non spin, clutch or transmission

My 6 year old whirlpool washer won’t always spin during the spin cycle. It will run through the the spin cycle but basket does not spin. If you spin it by hand it will complete spin but otherwise it does not spin through the spin cycle. A repairman came and replaced something that I can not read on his bill, but after this did not fix the problems, he stated it may be the clutch or transmission. How can I tell which to replace? I am thinking if it is the transmission i might as well just buy a new machine.

Pull off the outer shell, then remove the pump and motor. Turn the tranny coupler clockwise till the tranny engages spin. If hard to turn the coupler, you have bad brake shoes, or something stuck in the tub jamming the spin basket.
For repair info, go to my sticky above, replacing direct drive washer brake shoes.

Thanks Richappy, pulled it all apart following your past post. it would appear i have some play in my plastic brake cam driver so it is not completely disengaging the brake. Any quick solutions. I did file down the pads some and I am going to track packing the sleeve wheels. Let me know if you have any other thoughts
thanks again
