maytag thump.

This Maytag dryer makes a thumping sound when first loaded with wet clothes. As the clothes start to dry, the thumping diminishes. It stops when they are completely dry. Any ideas? Also, if possible, any special procedures on taking this monster apart? Your help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Thumping is often one of the rear support rollers (see Item 21 in Section 8 of the parts) has a flat spot.
As the unit runs the rubber softens and the flat spot along with the thumping disappears.

While you have it opened up you may as well check the belt, drum seals and glides, idler wheel etc. for wear and replace as necessary.

Also give the interior a good cleaning including the blower wheel.
Not a bad idea to also clean/check your vent system.

Basically an overhaul.
