Maytag washer clunking on agitate cycle

I have a Maytag washing machine that was purchased in 2005, after it fills with water and begins the wash cycle it makes a horrible loud clunking noise. I was able to change the dial to rinse and have the same thing happen after the refill. I changed to the dial to spin and was able to spin all of the water from the unit. Where do i start on diagnostics. The belt and tensioner pully are fine. I am thinking either transmission or bearing plate. any suggestions

If you can get the front off you should be able to determine if the noise is coming from the transmission. If it is that is a rather large and costly job. Besides the transmission you will also need to change the seals, and possible the bearings. Below is a picture of the transmission. There are a couple of different seal kits depending on the serial # of the unit.

I’ve also included a service manual for you to look over to see if it’s something you’d want to tackle.

One other link you may want to check into, that may be causing the noise.
