maytag washer draining issue

Smelled like burning rubber one day and instead of the water draining in a steady flow it was coming out full force through the hose. It was making a noise as well but finished the cycle. Next cycle I had to move the knob manually to spin, also had noise issue during spin. Next cycle OK, but loud and smelly and water still gushing out hose when draining. Finally did it in today. Towels did not drain all the way and it won’t let me move the knob to drain…ugh Though there is no standing water they are soaking wet. The way the clothes are pulled to the side I can only assume it was spinning in some sort of fashion.

This is really hard to diagnose, but given that the water is foul this suggests that somehow the the transmission is failing and polluting the system. That doesn’t explain though why the knob will not turn to the spin cycle.

Given the age of the machine your best solution might be a replacement with a basic top loader.

Water isn’t foul, just the burning smell. The knob won’t turn automatically to the final spin, but when done manually there is a humming type of sound but nothing happens. Wow, 9 years is all you get out of these now…ugh

Take off the front and check the pump for an obstruction. Then check the belt and the pulley and then take the belt off and put it in spin cycle. This will tell you if the problem is with the transmission or motor. If the pump is not blocked I suspect the transmission is locked and the smell is the belt burning.
