Motor smoking

Yesterday I heard a loud clicking noise with my Maytag washer as it was on the rinse cycle. The agitator didn’t seem to be moving too much. Then I smelled a slight burning smell. Now the washer won’t spin or drain. If I turn it on I can hear a buzzing sound for a couple seconds, then nothing.

I took the top and front off so I can plainly see the motor. I turned it on again and there is a little smoke coming from the motor. I was about to buy a new motor, which I am sure will need to be done no matter what, but wondered if the motor was the problem or if it could be the transmission.

How can I tell what the original problem was? I don’t want to spend $100+ on a new motor just to burn it out if the original problem was the transmission, or something else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I installed a brand new Maytag motor and it it’s doing the same thing. I don’t want to run it more than a couple seconds for fear of burning out the motor. Could it be the transmission? Or maybe something else? The tub spins but slowly. I am thinking that it’s the drain pump since water doesn’t seem to drain.
