Have a maytag washer that was given to me three years ago and have had no problem with it untill now. The water will fill and after that nothing other than clicking noise as though the timer is running. sometime the rinse and spin cycle at the end will work, and at other time wont work.

Humble,
I would start at the lid and the lid switch assembly.
Make sure the lid is not loose or bowed in.
Listen for a double click, when you open and close the lid.
If the lid is loose or bowed in the lid will not activate the switch assembly properly and may not allow the motor to run.
You also have a double switch assembly, the two switches have to activate properly ,in sequence , in order for the machine to run.
