Microwave blowing fuses and tripping breakers

Hi all,

I’m hoping someone can help me figure out where the problem lies here. I have a Whirlpool mounted microwave that was manufactured in October 2008. One day a few months ago, I returned home from work in the evening to notice that the clocks on my microwave and stove were out. Checked the breaker box, noticed one was tripped, and reset it. Everything came back on but the microwave. So I went to the hardware store and picked up a couple of 20A ceramic fuses for microwaves and replaced the internal fuse. Plugged back in and all was good.

That is, until it happened again about a month ago, and now again tonight. Same process (both the microwave fuse and the breaker were tripped). In none of these instances did this happen while I was using the microwave, although the last two times it’s happened shortly after I had finished nuking something.

As far as I can tell, the only things on this circuit are the microwave, oven, and a GFI with about four outlets. The microwave plugs into its own dedicated outlet, which is hidden up in the cabinets, if that matters. The breaker is 20A.

I’m far from being an electrician, but I can’t imagine what would cause this issue while the microwave isn’t even being used (I’m assuming that the microwave is the source of the issue here, and not just a symptom - I suppose I could be wrong about that). At any rate, before I start throwing money at a repairman/electrician/new microwave, I’d like to at least have a good idea what the problem might be.

Thoughts?
