So I obtained an old GE fridge, best I can tell it is late 40s or early 50s. I plugged it in it got cold, so I didn’t think much of it. I spent quite a bit of time restoring it, painted, replaced the door seals, etc. It looks great!
So I plugged it in to start using it. Now I realize that it makes a ridiculous amount of rattling noise on startup which lasts about 45 seconds. It seems to be coming directly from the compressor itself. After 45s it settles down and runs quietly, and it cools just fine. So I was wondering if this means that the compressor is dying, or if it is low on oil? I’ve looked for a replacement compressor, but of course I’m not having any luck finding one.
Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
I did find a new compressor that is also 1/8hp, but I have no idea if it would be appropriately sized.
Either one of the compressor inner springs has broken, or the compressor mounts have gone bad. I would check the rubber mounts first, if that will not fix it, you can try tilting the compressor till the noise stops.

The compressor is spring mounted, suspended from the top. The external mounts are in good shape I’ll try leaning the fridge to see if the sound goes away.
