Oven Preheats well, but won't maintain temp

My GE electric oven (model # J BP78G S2BB) will preheat perfectly, but the temperature drops steadily without reheating to maintain temperature.

If I turn the oven off every few minutes, then reset the temp dial, it will keep baking (the heating elements will produce heat until the proper temperature is reached). If I don’t keep doing this the oven just steadily cools.

I have a medium amount of electrical knowledge. I can do some basic stuff with a volt-ohm meter. I am trying to decide whether to attempt a repair myself, or just buy a new oven/range. I don’t want to end up replacing all the possible problem parts then also end up paying as much as purchasing a new oven. Similarly, I suspect that paying a repairman to come out and fix it will cost a significant percentage of a brand new appliance.

I was hoping it would be something as simple as replacing a relay - but I’m not sure this oven uses one to regulate the temperature.

Anyone willing to help me take this on?

Most likely the problem is a bad control board which has to be replaced together with the face plate according to the manufacturer instructions.

Gene.

First I want to say thanks very much for the help.

Is there a way I can test the control board to be sure that is the problem before I replace the parts?

AND

Are there other likely causes if that doesn’t do the job?

Thanks, Gene, for taking the time to help.

Much appreciated.
