Quirkey Spin - some times yes - some time no

Works perfect for maybe the first TWO loads - empties the water and SPINS

Then it washes and empties the water but refuses to SPIN

Can leave the wet clothes in the washer and come back the next morning go to a SPIN cycle and away it goes - SPINS like a top

Wonder if anyone else has had this problem - if so would you please respond and tell me what you had to do to fix the problem

I am not sure what you are referring to "on the PERFORMA" - If that is a brand of washer - them mine is PAV3360AWW.
Yes, I do have some what I guess are shavings - they are real fine powdery looking, like powder soap.

Are you suggesting that I put more tension on the SPRINGS?

Many thanks

You will need to order the snubber and follow the proceedure above.

From all indications - I will need to also order a TOOL - What does the tool do and can it be done without it?

NO,NO,NO, they allways say you need the special, expensive brake release tool, but it is not needed. Usually the brake housing screws are long enough to back off the housing without any problems. If the scews are too short, just replace with 11/2 inch long 8-32 screws. Just make sure you loosten the screws evenly, you should have no problems. Also, dump some corn starch on the new snubber to keep the wear down.

Go to %url% for info on this Performa. You can use thick washers to spread the springs. You will need to pull the entire tub and tranny out as an assembly. To be smart, you can pry it up and tilt out from the front, set it upside down on wood blocks, saves on the back!!
And as I said before, DO NOT remove the tranny pulley, not necessary!!
If you crunch into Google "replacing Maytag Performa snubber with pictures" you should get a bunch of sites, maybe the article I wrote on this site!!
