The fridge stops working, if I tap on the top front inside of the refrigeator it starts and runs for a while and will cool. I have replaced the defrost timer and the problem still is there.

If by "stops working" you mean that the compressor will not start, this is not a defrost problem. If you had a defrost problem the compressor would probably run all the time. The unit would try to cool down but never be able to achieve it’s set point since the air is not cooled efficiently.
My guess would be that your thermostat contacts are sticking open.
Yes, the compressor stops running and will not start unless I tap on the inside top of the fridge. I was told to replace the defrost timer (told it was probably stuck on defrost which will keep the compressor from starting). So, should I replace the cold control?
I also have the same problem, but mine only happens when it gets cold out. I have the frig in the garage as a second one. During the summer all is good. Once it gets cold out everything defrost. Once the temp gets below like 40. If I turn the heat on in the garage it freezes again. Any thoughts?
