The knob (WH01X10462) on my GE GCWN3000M washer broke off, so I ordered a new knob.
According to the video at another website specifically about that part (if you Google, you can find it), all I had to do was push the knob onto the stem.
Well, when I did that, the entire stem + switch(?) went behind the control panel.
What do I do now? The other knobs are still working fine and in place.
Okay what has happened here is that the timer is encased in a plastic case with tabs that hold it to the panel. These tabs are very weak (thanks GE) and break all the time. When you pushed the knob on you pushed the timer and broke the tabs.
You have two choices. Open up the top panel by taking out the screws in the top and you will see the timer laying there. You can either replace the timer or figures out a way to have it held in place so you can operate the machine.

Fortunately the knob isn’t for the timer.
The knob chooses cold, warm, or hot water setting.
It was in warm when this happened.
Assuming that I don’t do anything, will anything short out by leaving the switch dangling behind the front panel?
My preference is to "fix" this, but I also don’t want to make the situation worse. Right now we can wash in warm water.
That’s not a problem but I would still open up the top of the console and make sure the uninsulated part of the wiring is not touching anything. Again, you may also be able to jam it back so you can change the setting.
