Roper washer won't spin

Roper RAL5144ALO washer won’t spin. Water pumps out. Agitator turns slowly during spin cycle, can stop it with my hand.

The agitator turns or the tub is turning slowly?

Turns clockwise. Very weak. Ratcheting motion. No discernable counter clockwise motion.

With the agitator off, the shaft turns clockwise. I can easily stop it with my fingers.

Have noticed that there is what appears to be a clutch assembly on top of the gearbox. This assembly turns when the timer is set to the "spin" mode. So I assume that the gearbox is ok. Am guessing that perhaps some clutch parts are worn. Need to determine what parts to order.

A towel is stuck under the agitator in my Hotpoint washer - i was able to pry the little top cap off the agitator, but there is no visible way to release the agitator. There is only a molded plastic piece with 3 slots & no visible screw… Please help!

The agitator just pulls straight up once off take a look at the hub http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=2045447 that part is normally bad when thing start to get hung under the agitator. http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/clothes-washer-repair.html

! That sounds way too easy! & it was when i put my fingers under the bottom flange! THANK YOU for your quick response!
But i do not see the part that you reference… There IS a small plastic hub around the metal shaft, it is about 4 1/2" wide by about 1" deep (3" high total)… Is that the part that would need replacing?

I believe you are describing the part I was talking about. If that part is worn things can start to hang under the agitator. Also if it is worn it may not look like the one in the picture. It may not be anything wrong but that part being worn out will cause clothes to hang under the agitator. Hope this helps!!

Yes, you have been a great help! Thank you! If you have any advice for getting the agitator back on, that would help a lot, too. Would a rubber mallet be an acceptable tool? (Sounds like a silly question, but i can not get it on as easily as i got it off…!) i think the towel got caught because of a lot of long frayed strings that were hanging off it that i neglected to cut off when i put it in the washer, so i am hoping the hub is OK… But will keep your advice in mind when i do the next few loads. THANK YOU again!

The shaft that the agitator goes on has teeth and the agitator has a spline. While putting steady pressure on the agitator slowly turn it until the teeth line up and it should slip back down. Now sometimes when you remove the agitator the spline comes out of the agitator and you will see it on the end of the transmission shaft. In this case lube the rubber part on the end of the shaft with liquid soap and it should press back in the agitator.

our chest Fez. was working when we put it in the storage room. now we need it, it will run but will not get cold. I’ve looked for a reset button, but none. I am a electrician and the light is on and the dial is set right. Compressor is warm but not cold…?

If the compressor is warm and you can feel it vibrating then it is running.
This tells you that your thermostat and compressor start device is OK.
The most likely cause then is that you have had a freon leak and are now empty OR there is a plu in the sealed system.
Unfortunately, this is not a low cost repair and you are probably better off putting the dollars into a new unit.

Another possibility is if when you moved it the unit was tilted to the point where oil ran into the sealed system.
After you moved it did you let it stand for 24 hours before turning it on?
If not you may want to try that now.
