Spin Cycles Will Not Engage On Their Own

My washer will run thru a regular wash from start to finish. It will fill, agitate and drain all on its own. The problem I am having is that any time the drum tries to engage a spin (to drain wash or rinse water, the spin during the rinse cycle or the final spin) I can hear the hum of the motor only the "hum" is a little louder than if the drum were spinning. I can sit and listen the the machine and when I hear this "hum" lift the lid and set it down. Then I can hear the sound of the drum engaging and the spin will begin. It seems to take a little time for the drum to get up to speed though. I have the gearcase removed and the motor coupler seems to be in good working condition. My guess is the clutch? Is there something else that could be causing my issue? Or should I just go for it and replace the clutch and hope that is the problem?

Thanks!

The clutch could be the problem since it will ultimately spin. You may have two problems actually, a weak clutch and a bad timer. The timer has to stop the motor for the machine to shift into spin mode. When you open the lid you do manually what the timer is supposed to do automatically.

Go ahead and replace the clutch lining, and if you still have a problem and it will spin once you raise the lid, you will have to replace the timer.

I have now replaced the clutch lining kit and the timer on my washer and there is no change at all in the problems I am having. What else could be causing this problem? Can I return the clutch lining kit and timer that I purchased here?

About 5% of the time the problems you have can be caused by a bad drive block. You will need a special wrench to take off the hut that holds it on after you take off the agitator.

You cana return the other parts, but you might consider keeping the new clutch lining if your old one has any wear or problems.
