Thumping sound when running

My dryer is running much louder all of the sudden. When I first turn it on, it kind of rumbles to a start like the belt is slipping, then it evens out but it is much louder than it normally is. I’ve read that the problem may be the idler or rear drum pulley. If so, are these hard for a do-it-yourselfer to replace? Should I just call my local appliance guy?

Here are your parts

Yes, usually it is a rear drum roller (Item 16 in Section 7)

I cannot say . It is definitely doable by a DIYer but depends on your abilities and motivation. A appliance person will probably charge around $100.00 or more for labor/travel so get a quote. I would replace both rollers also check their shafts for wear. It will take you a few hours.
I would not order parts till you get it opened up. You may as well check the belt, idler roller, front glides, drum and other seals. Basically give it an overhaul.

Give the interior a good cleaning including the blower wheel.
Also it is a good idea to check/clean your vent system.

Here is a good site with info on various units, it should help you decide.
