washer does not drain or spin

Washer agitates then timer stops for transmission shift then nothing, timer does not advance, does not drain, does not spin. It spins in one direction in the agitation mode with only water in the tub, is that normal. when I put reisistance to the agitator, it jerks in only one direction. Any ideas? Pump, clutch, neutral drive? Does this model have belts?

Is there any motor noise in spin?

no motor noise at all, and timer makes a buzzing/whining sound, but timer takes it throught agitation cycle fine

I would think so too but it works fine in the wash cycle up to the point of the drain/rinse cycle. does this machine have belts? does anyone know? or is it direct drive? I looked at schematic and could not find them and can’t locate the pump either, so is it integrated in gear drive box that cost about $140 to replace. is there a cheaper way to replace the pump?

The pump is actually a piece of plastic with impeller inside. It does not have a separate motor and sitting on the main motor shaft.

You can try to jiggle the timer knob to prove it’s bad. In my opinion it is .

Thanks Gene,

you probably are right. if I replace the timer and I have the same problem what would be your next best guess? I have run the timer forward manually and have engaged the wash mode with no problem, but when it comes to drain, rinse and spin, i can just hear the timer ticking along just as normal. Do you think it the contacts on all settings that is bad on the timer? or is there some solenoid that kicks in the motor to drain? and spin?

Another possibility is a bad motor. You can use this wiring diagram to check the motor windings.

Gene.

The motor is reversible and it rotates in different directions for wash and spin. It has two separate windings for that.

If the motor is silent, it has nothing to do with transmission.

thank you gene for all your advice. one final question: what would allow the motor to work in one direction and not allow it to work in the other direction? The timer? some loose of broken wire?

Thanks for all your input, I feel ready to troubleshoot with confidence
