Washer does not spin clothes fast enough

I have a Maytag Atlantis washer that does not seem to be spinning the clothes fast enough on the spin cycle. As background, I have had this washer for approximately 5 years and have had a switch in the control replaced by a repairperson when the washer was 2 years old. Last summer I replaced the spin bearing in the machine and it seemed to work fine until now. The washer spin cycle speed is now slower than usual and not removing water out of the clothes before they go to the dryer. There is also a “catching or clunking” noise during the agitation cycle. The belt on the machine has been replaced and the bottom pulley can be moved freely in both directions and the pump seems to be removing the water out of the washer. Any suggestions on where to start or if I should cut my losses with this machine would be appreciated. Thanks

The slow spin sounds like a failing thrust bearing, but the added noise in agitation suggests a bad transmission.

Thank you for the advice magician 59. I may take a gamble and replace the thrust bearing to see if I can get the washer to last a few more months.

Thanks magician59. I removed the belt from the bottom of the washer and spun the pulley in both directions. (The washer dial was turned to the spin position.) When I spun it clockwise the agitator would turn in one direction and then reverse and turn in the opposite direction. When I spun the pulley counter clockwise again the agitator would turn in one direction and then reverse and spin in the opposite direction. When I spun the pulley in either direction the drum did not appear to move at all. There was no clicks, bangs, etc. when the pulley was turned however, after turning approximatly 10-12 revolutions the pulley would drag for a quarter of a turn and then release. The pulleys for the motor and water pump seemed to work fine. Thanks

The machine should agitate while the pulley is rotated only in one direction. If it agitates while turning the pulley in BOTH directions, I would definitely suspect the tranny.

Just bought a updated main board WR55X10942 and installed. The problem is gone.
