I have a GE washing machine, model WWA7678MALWH (not sure of the age as it was given to me about 3 years ago). It was running great a year ago, but has been sitting in the same place for a little over a year because I have a newer machine I’ve been using. Now my neighbor in the same apartment building wants to use this GE washer. So, I scooted the machine 8 feet to hook it up to my neighbor’s water supply. Plugged it in and started a test wash cycle with no clothes in the machine. The water filled the machine fine. But when the agitation should have started (and yes, the lid was closed), the machine made a loud hum for about 5 seconds and shut off. If I pushed the setting knob in and opened and closed the lid and then let the machine sit for a few minutes and then pulled the knob out again, the machine would hum again and shut off. So, I decided I would turn the setting to a point where I thought I could at least get the water to drain, but no matter where I set the knob, I get the same humming and then shut off. It was working fine when i stopped using it about a year ago. Any suggestions? Thanks
This is a 20+ year old model. I think either the timer is at fault, or the transmission may have seized up during the off use period, or it was damaged in some way, but given its age I do not think repair is an option.
