Washer fills, won't agitate or drain, hums

I have a Whirlpool top load washer that quit working in the middle of a load. It will fill, but will not agitate or drain. It makes a humming sound which stops when you lift the lid, so I’m fairly certain it’s not the lid switch.
When it quit working, the motor felt quite warm a couple hours after it had stopped, and there was a small amount of water leaking from underneath the machine.

I replaced the coupling today in case that was the problem, but the old one didn’t look damaged (I didn’t want to take it apart until I had the replacement part) and replacing it didn’t help.

What do you suggest?

Sounds like maybe something caught in the pump preventing the motor from spinning. Remove the cabinet and jump out the lid switch, release the clips on the pump and pull it off the motor (leave hoses connected). Try running it with pump out of the way.

Remove the pump an the hoses on it an look in it for something stuck in there, if it is free, then the motor is going bad.

No need to remove the hoses at this point. If the motor still won’t run with the pump removed, the pump is not the problem. There are other tests to make before condeming the motor if the pump isn’t the problem.

Thanks!

There was a thick fabric mp3 player case jammed in the pump. I pulled it out and the washer is working fine now.
