I have a problem with my Roper washer…it makes the noise as soon as the rinse or spin cycle starts and continues until the cycle is finished or I lift the lid. The washer no longer spins during either rinse or spin cycle. However…it still agitates and drains.
Hi.
That could be several reasons why the washer is not spinning.
First remove the agitator and check the drive block. It should have 2 grooves 389140
Next check the motor coupling 285753A
Next the clutch 285785
Here are the breakdown diagrams and http://www.appliancepartspros.com/brake-clutch-gearcase-parts-for-roper-rab5232eq1.html
Post the results.
Simon.
I checked the motor coupling…it’s fine. I checked the clutch…it’s fine (tight). I also checked the drive block and it looks like both grooves/notches are there. Could it be a bearing or something…or I’ve even been told it might be the transmission…?
Thanks for your repy…please let me knwo if you have further information or something else I could check.

Run the machine with the cabinet off. You will have to bypass the lid switch to do this. Observe the clutch hub when in spin mode. If the clutch hub is spinning, then the gearcase is ok. If it’s not spinning, open and close the lid to pause the motor for a few seconds. This is to ensure it’s out of neutral drain mode. If it’s spinning and the basket is not, and the clutch is not slipping, the brake cam driver may be broken. You need to remove the agitator, thoroughly clean the exposed part of the agitator shaft and then remove the gearcase. Check that the tab on the brake cam driver is not broken. Rotate the brake cam driver CCW which should release the brake and rotate the basket freely.
