Washer shuts prior to filling

When starting my Kenmore washer, the proper lights come on (including door locked light) and when I hit the start button you here the typical "click" sound followed by a delay. The delay is normal for a couple seconds and then the water usually starts filling. Now, the delay happens and then the machine just shuts off. This happens on every setting I have tried on the washer. I am thinking it might be either the switch on the door or perhaps the water valve in the machine. I did check the water supply to the machine and it appears OK. The only other odd thing is that there is a small magnet about 3/4" x 1/4" x 1/4" that was stuck to the inside of the door. I have no idea if it came from inside the machine (could be from one of my kids’ pockets). Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as my extended warranty ran out and a repairman is not an option at the moment. Thank you for your time.

If you take off the bottom panel you should find some tech notes that will take you through a trouble shooting routine.

I suspect the door lock mechanism is your problem, but the tech notes should enable you to confirm that.

Thanks for the response. I will get to those tech notes and see where they lead me. My gut tells me it is the locking mechanism as well. I really appreciate your time.

I think that the issue is that the magnet I found is from the dispenser tray and must be in place for the washer to work. However, i can not figure out where it goes. Does anyone know where the magnet goes?
