I have a whirlpool washer that will wash my clothes but when it is time for them to spin it makes a loud noise, kind of like a clicking noise, and it will not spin. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have read about the drive block and took a look at it. Im not sure exactly why it would not be any good. Are the drive blocks supposed to be greasy?
Most of the time the drive block will have some grease on it that came through the center seal.
Better to clean it off while your there.
If you happen to see that the drive block turns but the drum doesn’t that could mean that the pins that stick out on the spin tube/basket drive ass.
might be worn out and then the whole spin tube/basket drive ass. would have to be replaced.
As for the not spinning and hearing a clicking noise.
Does it sound like the motor is trying to go then stopping and then doing this again and again?
Or does it sound like the motor starts and then there is a clicking sound while it’s running.
The most common part to fail for this washer is the motor Coupling.
Part number is 285753A and I replace many every week.
But if it’s broken the washer should not be washing either.
It might fill and you might hear the motor but that doesn’t mean the agitator is moving.
If the agitator is moving then that would mean your coupling is good.
And that then points to the motor or capacitor.
We’ll see if the coupling is good and go from there.
Let us know if you have any questions.
The middle will spin but the basket won’t. Do you have any other ideas? There is a clicking sound while the spinning cycle is going.

This could be a transmission problem.
But I believe the agitator will still move while in spin even if the clutch doesn’t work properly.
But normally won’t cause that type of noise if it’s a clutch.
If you have the lid open and are pushing down on the lid switch.
Turn the washer on spin and try to spin the basket yourself to get it going.
Does it start spinning then?
Have you taken the agitator off and then wiped all the grease off and try it with the lid open and agitator out to see if the drive block is turning?
No, it still does not spin. When I tried to spin it, it was kinda hard to turn.
Ok so just so I got it all straight…
When you put the washer in spin.
The middle agitator is turning but the drum isn’t.
And you hear a clicking noise?
And the drum is tight and not moving at all.
If this is all true. Then I would have to think the transmission is causing this problem.
The only reason I think it’s the transmission is because the agitator is moving which means the coupling is good.
And if the drum doesn’t turn at all, even with a push while it’s on spin. Then the clutch is probably not turning.
If the clutch is not turning that is because the gear in the transmission is stripped or skipping.
This is all on assumptions but I’ve seen it often and wouldn’t be the first time.
Let me know If what I said sounds like what is happening… Since I’m not there to see it I might have a few more questions to ask.
I won’t say to replace the transmission until I’m 100% sure that is the problem.
