Washer won't spin or agitate

We have super wet clothes, this just started yesterday. When we checked it out, we found out that the washer is not agitating during wash or spinning when the timer enters spin cycle. We’ve checked the belt, the wiring, and even pulled everything out to clean it (it was gross, mom had it 10 years before she gave it to me >.>) when we manually turn the inner tub, the transmission assembly and belt turns. The motor isn’t making funny noises, it sounds the same as when it normally runs, except that its not agitating or spinning. Could the door lock assembly be the cause of this trouble? Or could there be a most nefarious problem?

Any response would be appreciated, we have loads of laundry piling up with 4 kids, 3 of them boys under the age of 13.

Many thanks

I had similar problem with my GE. I’m no expert but considering your laundry needs I’ll throw a couple suggestions out. The belt was loose on my washer so when I checked it initially I ruled it out as the problem. I kept resetting the machine and finally the belt did break. Thinking back, I had not been pleased with the washer’s performance for some time prior - because the belt was loosening, it did not produce a strong agitation so my clothes weren’t as clean as they should have been. Check the tension of the belt.

After I replaced the belt, it still didn’t spin or agitate. I checked the fuse harness and found it was bad. I replaced it and it worked great.

It could also be the lid/door switch not engaging. I’m not familiar with checking this but I’m sure the manual would be able to walk you through it.

Good luck!

I would remove the front panel and check the belt, probably burnt off. If so, post this and we will guide you to further tests.

We’ve completely taken the panels off, have checked the belt, its tight and in one piece, no burnt rubber smell, etc. Black stuff came off on my husband’s hands when he pulled it off to check, but I am guessing its probably just residu from the motor as the thing is 20 yrs old and has never been cleaned as far as i know.

Run it with the panel off and see what is moving/not moving.

We have run it several times with the panel off, once even with the belt off to see if it was binding somewhere. When we run it, the wash cycle starts, but agitator doesn’t move, spin cycle drains but doesn’t spin. Neither the belt, of transmission housing moves during any of those cycles.

With the belt off, does the motor puller turn when it’s supposed to?

Nothing underneath moves. Except the drainmotor.

You have a failed start winding or a failed timer or start capacitor. Your motor just hums but never starts up.If it fails to work on any cycle, most probably a bad start capacitor or motor.
