water filter leaking on Kitchenaid side by side

We have had refrigerator for five years. We have never replaced the water filter. This morning the filter began leaking profusely. Can the filter process be sidestepped? How do I stop the leak?

Turn off the water supply for the refrigerator. Remove the water filter as described in the [Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL KSRI25FNBL00 | AppliancePartsPros.com](http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Use%20and%20Care%20Guide%20-%202305802.pdf"]Owners manual[/URL].

I’ll try replacing the filter because I’m having the same problem. But I’m wondering why it still leaked out of the filter canister when I took the filter out. Can the unit run without a filter?

What is the complete model number of the refrigerator?
