Whirlpool Duet F06

Hello,

I have a whirlpool GHW9400PL4 and am experiancing a problem that I believe is related to the motor/control boards.

Whenever I run a cycle, when I reach a spin cycle the machine will stop and display the error code F06. I have checked the connections related to the motor, and all seemed clean except for at the wiring harness at the motor. I cleaned some oxidation from these conections with sandpaper, and sprayed the connections with some WD40. The washer worked fine for 2 weeks afterwards. Now when reaching a spin cycle the time remaining flashes, the washer attempts to resume its cycle. After a couple of repititions of flashing and resuming, the error code F06 appears again.

One other detail - I can run the system through the full set of diagnostic tests without any issues with the motor spinning. Also, I can occasionally get the machine to run a full cycle if I unplug it for a couple of hours and try again. At this point I am leaning towards the issue being control board related - does that sound right?

Any suggestions? Do I need to do a better job of cleaning the electrical contacts at the motor wiring harness? Is it another problem, like the MCU? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi.

Use the tech sheet to check the motor and motor control.Replace the motor harness W10137867

Here are the breakdown diagrams and http://www.appliancepartspros.com/pump-motor-parts-for-whirlpool-ghw9400pl4.html

Post the results.

Simon.

I have checked the resistances across the motor pins at the wiring harness. The resistance across Pins 1-2, 1-3 and 2-3 are all 6 ohms, and the resistance across Pins 4-5 is 118 ohms.

I have ordered the wiring harness - when it is in I will replace it and see if that works.

Is there anything else I should be testing while waiting for the part to arrive?

Hi.

You may order the MCU also. It can be return if you don’t need it (even if you install it).

Simon.

hey there, I’m just wondering if the wiring harness fixed the issue? I’m experiencing a similar issue here. I will pull the harness out and check the connections later.

Hello,

I am experiencing the F06 Error as well. It is very intermittent, and unpredictable.

Like others, I’ve:

-Unplugged the unit overnight to only have it run 3 Loads before failing.
-Checked all connections. Added dielectric grease to the connections.
-Ran the Whirpool Test Cycles.

It is working right now, only after snugging up the ground connections on the motor and MCU, those seemed loose. I can’t say for sure if this has solved the problem, however I have had 3 successful cycles through the machine.

Something else I noticed while messing with this thing all weekend.

  1. Run the machine on "Drain/Spin" with "No Spin", so you’ve drained all the water from the tub. Then unplug it for an hour. This seemed to work each time I received the Error.
  2. Seems more likely to fail on larger, heavier loads. (IE, Towels, Bedding, Outwear)

Checked the temp on the motor after it failed and it was only warm, the MCU however was warmer. After adding a small computer fan to the heat sink of the MCU, the washer has been trouble free through 4 cycles.

Is the problem with the MCU an overheating issue? Possibly the reason for the larger capacitors on the new MCU’s?

Hey there, I ended up ordering the MCU from Appliance Parts Pro and this resolved my issues. No problems since replacement. They have a great return policy, so if the MCU doesn’t resolve the issue, you can send it back and give the motor a go. The replacement MCU had an increased version number, so obviously there is a problem with the original part IMO.
