Was working on a Maytag Performa made by Whirlpool. Washer had a bad spin shake, so bad the spin basket top counterbalance ring dug right thru the tub and caused a bad water leak in spin. Found a mold break protrusion on the side of the counterbalance ring.
Also, found the brake shoes where dragging and the 50-100 watts of heat energy warped the brake housing causing the shake.
Will follow up on this to verify. Was wondering if anyone has seen this before.
If true, would explane the cause of similar problems I have seen.
I have seen a few of these machines with leaking balance rings resulting in the tub contacting the side with a heavy load but nothing yet with the brake assembly. I have found two so far that didn’t have a tight drive block nut which wore a opening in the side of the tub where the balance ring was contacting it. I have seen a few front loaders lately missing parts out of the box so nothing is really surprising my anymore.
Thanks for the response. I checked the drive block nut,it was ok. This washer really shakes a lot in spin and the lady is waiting for warranty service so I can’t do anything now. Will verify a solution on the next shaking washer I service.
I’ve heard or done nothing with the brake problem described, BUT, the balance ring is a problem when it looses its contents!!!
I replaced the spin basket with a good used one and it did not solve the shaking problem The new spin basket plastic ring had the same amount of fluid in it, but the plastic ring had no mold break protrusion…
I did not have the time to check the brake housing for rust pits, but I did measure the spin motor current and it was higher than normal.
The amp draw of the motor will be high if the tub is THRASHING around, I assume that you have checked all suspention parts, leveling legs, floor for being solid proper loading pratice.
I turned the motor with a wrench and could feel dragging brake shoes and slight warpage or something causing a uneven dragging.
That could be, but, when you turn the motor with a wrench, you load and unload the brake, which will give you the feeling that something is not turning smoothly, I could be wrong(never happens) LOL!!! but I have never seen a brake problem do this!!!
