Whirlpool Washer Will Not Advance To Drain/Spin Cycle

I picked up this washing machine from Craigslist back on 9/30. Unit had no known issues, and seemed to work well once we got it home and installed.

Last week while running a regular load, it seemed that the control knob was getting stuck before switching over to the Rinse->Spin mode. The machine sounded like it was trying to go to the next mode, but couldn’t make it by itself. I kept trying to change the mode manually to advance it so it would drain, and spin so I could dry the clothes which eventually worked.

Looking to replace whatever necessary parts so this will be fixed. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I want to make sure I order the correct parts, and not anything extra. Also want to make sure it’s worth fixing.

It could be the timer. Do any of the other cycles work? Or are they all having trouble in the same spot? Drain and spin?

I tried the washer on another setting. It filled half way with water, then stopped and started making a buzzing noise ~30 seconds, which would then click and shut off ~3 minutes. This happened on and off for a while until I pushed the knob to stop.

After reading the post (linked below), I was not sure if it could possibly be the lid switch?

I also am including a picture of the dial. As you can see the top white dial does not control the silver plate which points to the mode. I have to turn the silver plate, and use the white knob to push / pull the start / stop mode. Is this another issue or related to the same timer?

Unless your knob is broken, its probably the timer.

The motor can go bad, the gear teeth can get stripped. Most of that timer is just plastic. In the old days I saw more than a few bad motors. You used to be able to buy just the motor or just the timer. I’ve also seen them break internally and then the pointer doesn’t line up on the correct cycle.

So the timer should fix both problems? Or is there an additional piece I would need?
