Sounds very much like the lid switch if this is a basic Whirlpool made machine. (Your model number is incomplete so I am guessing that is what it is).

Check the video library and you will find a very good video on how to replace it. This is definitely a diy project, and assuming you have basic skills and like to work on things I would say go ahead and see if that is the problem, and if so, put in the new part.
