When filling washer with the temp set to warm, the washer would fill using some hot water then cold. Makes sense. For a while now, it’ll switch from cold to hot (based on me feeling the water enter the tub), then then immediately switch back to cold causing the pipes to loudly bang. If I select Hot or Cold it doesn’t cause the bang. Also filling the tub 1/3-1/2 way with the Hot setting, then switching to Warm does better (mostly bang-free).
Yes, I already have the $10-ish hammer arresters on both lines, and even when they were newly installed the pipes still banged.
The washer senses the temperature of the incoming water, right? Our house has an oil furnace with "Summer Hook Up" water heater. It normally takes a minute or so for the hot water to appear. I’m wondering if the washer turns on the hot, senses it’s cold and immediately switches back to cold causes the hammer.
Maybe the temp sensor with age gotten, uh, pickier about the temp? I could replace the Water Inlet Valve (if the temp sensor is there, right?), but not if its going to behave the same way.

There is a thermistor in the valve to tell it incoming temp and it’ll try to modulate the valves to achieve the set temp. It may be seeking hot or cold and switching valves more often due to the summer system.

So does it make sense that the sensor might age and get overly sensitive? Is it worth swapping in a new valve?

Not really worth it in my mind. As long as you’re certain it’s the house pipes making the banging. You’ll find out in a few months when summer ends.
I would guess that the problem is decreased when you have filled with hot water for a while because at that point the pressure in the system has dropped because the hot water tank is also pulling cold water. But that’s just a guess and your house may be plumbed in a manner to avoid that.
If the banging really bothers you you may be able to locate where the pipe is hitting a stud or something and with a small hole in the drywall fill the cavity with that expanding foam. I personally wouldn’t go that far but it is an option if it bothers your family.
