Agitator works but spinning is loud/slow/locked with burn smell

Hi,
My washer has been making louder and louder sound when it spins to drain. The agitator seems to work fine. Lately there has been a few times the spinning failed to take off and there is burned smell of some kind (burned metal?). I have no idea what could be broken (tub bearing, break assembly, …) Any help is greatly appreciated.

Could be failing tub bearing and/or lower transmission bearing. This will require complete disassembly of the washer to diagnose. You can remove the front panel and take a look at the top of the lower transmission bearing to see if it’s getting rusted out.

Hi Eric,

Thank you so much for responding to this thread. I also forgot to include one detail, when the washer is not in use, it is very hard to turn the drum. Is this also consistent with the bearing being worn out? Thank you.

Bolto

No, that is normal as the brake is engaged when not in spin mode.
