"we" overloaded our top load washer and it "popped and stopped mid cycle. There was a smell of burnt rubber. now it will fill with H20 but will not agitate or spin. When on wash or spin settings there is a loud ratcheting or thumping knocking sound, and neither the agitator nor the tub ever moves… The belt is ok, but you can see a bit of a worn spot where the motor pulley turned but the belt didnt. All 3 pulleys turn freely by hand. the drive pulley when turned clockwise will turn the agitator, and when turned counterclockwise will turn the drum, braking when you stop turning the pulley. I took apart and looked at the thrust bearing and it looks ok. should i spend the $ and replace what looks like a good thrust bearing or is it possibly the transmission?
Dani,
Go with the "thrust bearing kit"
When you turned the drive pulley, and everything worked, you pretty much verified a good transmission. A distorted or worn out thrust bearing assembly, will produce the noise you described, and can still "look" OK, The tolerances are pretty tight, it doesn’t take a lot.
You may want to consider a new motor pulley as well, if it’s melted/distorted bad enough,
Good Luck and Thanks,
Thanks for your help so far, I appreciate it. I recieved the thrust bearing kit, a new motor pulley, and replaced them both. While turning the tansmission pulley clockwise the bucket spins and counterclockwise the agitator moves. so I plugged it in to give it a test. There is still a ratcheting sound when on wash and the agitator bounces around not really circling. The drum still does not move on spin. Is it possible I have the thrust bearing kit adjusted wrong even though when the pulley is moved in either direction the respective inside parts move as well, or…? What should be my next step? Thanks again.

Dani,
You could still have an issue in the thrust bearing adjustment. An old rule for the adjustment was, it should have been very difficult to install the "E" clip onto the end of the shaft. When you turn the drive pulley clockwise, there should be a 5/16 to 3/8 inch gap between the cam and pulley faces, when the pulley gets tight, but not engaged. And the tub should start to turn in less thn 1/2 revolution, if all’s adjusted properly.
We don’t think you’ll need a transmission, but there is a slight possibility, and we need to make sure you have the proper adjustments before you we go there.
Thanks and Good Luck,
