Dead Kenmore Advantium 120

Used the microwave last nite and it died. Control panel is blank.
The outlet has power, but microwave is not showing any life. I am pretty handy, is there a blown fuse or control panel I can diagnose and fix myself. All I have is the owners manual, but no parts diagram/schematics.

Unplug the microwave, and take the control panel off, and inside there will be a small buss fuse. If you can see the capacitor inside, lay your screw driver accross the 2 terminals, to be sure there is no charge in thew capacitor. We don’t want you to get shocked. Then replace the buss fuse. Also be sure you have power to the plug. If that does not work, you need a new board. That fuse is either a 5amp slow blow, or you can replace it with a 20 amp Tom http://www.applianceeducator.com/parts.htm

Hi Tom,

I checked both the 20A and 12A buss fuses that are above the control panel (actually behind the vent). Both OK. I replaced the 20A just in case, but still no luck. Any other things I can check?

I have a GE Advantium and it also died the same way. Had it repaired in less than 15 minutes by a GE tech and all he did was replace the TCO. If you search the web and find the exploded diagrams for your oven just lok for the TCO and replace it as I’m pretty sure that is what it is. In my oven it was located behind the top vent panel and under a panel and it is against the left inner wall. If your Kenmore was made by GE it will probably be in the same area. You were right, it was the TCO, located approximately where you said. I actually did not have to get a new one. All the tech did was remove it from the microwave, we put it in a cup of ice and left in the freezer for about 10min. That closed it. Installed back in and works fine now. It makes sense since the last time we used the microwave, we were using the convection option. It gets hot inside the microwave and the TCO opens up if it gets too hot. Thanks for the help

I have a similar problem with my GE Over the Range model HVM1750SMSS. I’ve traced the 120v to and through two of those little buttons that I now understand are "TCO’s", per the above. I suppose that stands for Thermal Control something. Could there be another one I’m missing? Can anyone find me a source for schematics?
