Hi Experts!
Hopefully you can help me with this problem: I have a Whirlpool dryer, which is blowing air, but not producing any heat. I took the back off and saw two things that concern me:
Soot - I assume from electrical fire or something? The black thing looks OK though, doesn’t look like it has any damage - or it was replaced.
only one wire is running to the heating coil. Shouldn’t there be two wires? I could not find another loose wire anywhere.
Do you guys have suggestions on how to bring the heat back to the dryer? Thermal fuse is OK, I checked for that.
I was trying to find that wire for a while, bu there is no sign of it anywhere. Is there a diagram I could refer to, or at least get a color, or approximate location of the source?
There are no snapped, cut, or burned loose wires in that area.
The red wire runs from the bottom panel.
Frombyu there nothing wrong with the wiring I check the diagram the two heavy red wires carry your 240v to the element the burn,t area may be from the element, shorted to the metal box.Look inside or remove the element and check for any breaks.then start from the first. check you fuses/breakers to make sure there not open.If good, check the operating theremstat to make sure the stat is not open. then check the hi limit thermostat[the one on the can at the bottom] to make sure that not open…post your findings…
I did a quick check this morning with a battery and a lamp - every fuse ,breaker, and thermostat pass. I will take out the heating element and inspect it closer in the evening.
Abbie, the heating element has only 1 wire connected (the solid Red). There has got to be two, and you say ‘the two heavy red wires carry your 240v to the element the burn’, I only can see one connected in the first image (PICT0007_post.jpg ), what color is the other wire, and where is it coming from?
Hi Nat,
Ah. Ok - I think it is starting finally make sense. The dryer wasn’t heating ever since the wrong part was installed / replaced - because there is no way it could. Seems like the thermostat does have the 3/16" terminal, so I’ll need to do the cutting off/crimping the wire, just like it is outlined in the instructions. After I do that, do I install the jumper wire on the thermostat terminal on the left (where red with white stripe) or right (white with balack stripe)? The part manual shows the connector on the thermostat that is closest to the coil connector (that would be left) - is the thermostat wired in correctly? What does "To Harness" mean?
Follow the directions (I do recommend getting the correct parts) I’m not sure what those are for, but it’s not a Whirlpool!
The "To Harness" is talking about the wire harness.

Hi Nat,
Ok, so I did just like the part manual said - got a jumper wire, and connected the free coil terminal with the thermal cut off (correct if i am wrong) (where red wire connects)
Now the coil is glowing red all the time, even on Wrinkle Guard setting, when it should be no heat. What did I do wrong?
And also, on the picture with burned area, is that correct part used? it really looks like it should be something with two screws, not one…
That’s what I was saying before those aren’t the correct thermostats for your dryer, it comes in a kit part number 279816 which is both of the thermostats on the element housing.
Nat
It’s more likely the incorrect thermostats that were put in. If you need a complete wiring diagram to check all the wires I can probably locate one.
Nat
Hi again… So I installed the kit, and I referred to Replacing 279816 thermal cutoff kit (page 2)post. I still have the problem that on any setting the coil glows… Fluff air, Wrinkle Guard - manual says there is no neat on those settings. I connected black/white wire to jumper wire, so now jumper wire connects the High Limit thermostat terminal #1, and the coil. on the other side of the thermostat there is a red wire now. I tried switching them - no difference.
