Dryer will not stay on after Start button is pushed

My G.E. dryer will start when the start button is pushed, but will not continue to run when you let go of the button. I have replaced the start button, but it did not fix the problem. If the button is taped down, it will run.

I cannot find any info on the given model number.
please check it.

If it is an older unit that uses a mechanical timer then odds are that it is a problem with a centrifugal switch on the motor.

There are two of them on the motor. They close/activate when the motor gets close to operating speed,

One of them switches in the heater. This ensures that there is airflow before the heater comes on. Youdid not mention it so I assume that when it runs it has heat.

The other switch does two things.
It disconnects the motor’s start winding which would cause the motor to overheat if left in circuit.
It also provides an alternate/parallel circuit path around the start switch so that you can release the switch and the unit keeps running.

Could be a loose/disconnected/faulty wire or a bad centrifugal switch.

On some older units you can replace just the switches but on most units you have to replace the motor.

Denman…Thanks for the info. I had trouble finding info on this model also. Even on the G.E website. They had models close to it, but not with this number. The number is correct though according to the sticker on the door.
The dryer does have heat. I will check into the switches on the motor and possibly replace the motor. Thanks again.

You are welcome
Good luck with it.

The wiring diagram may be in the control console. They like storing them in there.
