This dryer was given to me and I was told that it is slow at drying clothes. The heating elements look good. What else can I check and how do I check? Could it be a thermostat?

Have you actually tried it?
The most common cause of slow drying is a dirty or malfunctioning vent system.
Also check/clean the blower wheel.
Less of a problem these days but often in the past using too much fabric softener would coat the lint filter screen with residue, reducing the air flow.
So I would also check it.
