Found Plastic Parts In Crushed Ice. No More Cubed Ice.

After filling a glass with crushed ice I found a thick piece of clear plastic in my glass (looked just like ice). I discarded ice and was working fine since (have been inspecting glass ever since though). Then I found a flat, white piece of plastic in a glass and now it won’t switch back to cubed ice. From the research I’ve done here I believe the plastic to be parts for the solenoid… Well at least the latter plastic piece I found. The first piece may of just caused the problem. I’ve been debating buying a whole new ice dispenser bucket and auger assembly but that’s a bit spendy. Any chance anyone here knows based on my vague description what parts (or a handful of inexspensive parts) I can replace to avoid a spendy fix?

There are two plastic things that will typically break in these dispensers the auger and the crusher cover. The crusher cover is the plastic cover that separates the ice crusher from the ice storage. The auger is the part that pulls the ice into the ice crusher and into the dispenser. You may have to replace one or both of these parts. This page should help Ice Dispenser Repair For GE Refrigerators

As far as the cube part there is a rod on the outside of the dispenser. This rod sticks into a solenoid at the back. The solenoid will lift up when you select cubed ice and this will lift up on a flap that will allow the ice to by-pass the crusher so you get cubed ice. What you have to do is figure out why the flap isn’t lifting up. It could be jammed or the solenoid at the back could be hung.

I discarded the ice and inspected the ice storage container. I found a piece of the ice maker inside. It’s white plastic and it has teeth on it. I think it’s called a rake? Could the first piece of plastic I found have been responsible for the rake falling off? I guess I need a whole new assembly now… The crusher, auger and storage container seem to be in one piece.

If you got a piece of the icemaker out of the ice bin then you need to replace the icemaker. If there is something broken in the ice bin such as the crusher cover or the auger you can replace the individual part that you need. Or you can replace it as an assembly. It will cost more as the assembly but if you don’t feel like you can take the dispenser apart and get it back together then it may be the way to go. There is a video on this page that shows how to dissemble the dispenser.
