GE Profile REFRIG. ICEMAKER need help !!

The Situation : The ice maker has a part, it is plastic (clear), located in the back of the outside of the ice bucket, and when I remove the ice bucket I see that this part is in 2 pieces (it should be one). I am not sure what this part is called but the closest thing I was able to find is maybe the "ice maker drive cup". Now when I call for either cracked ice or cubes from the outside of the door, it sounds as if it starts to move (the auger) but when the the crack in the bad part hits, it sounds like it "skips" and then does not complete the turning motion and as a result…no ice comes out. There is plenty of ice being made!! Now, I am a very "handy" housewife and I am not afraid to tackle this job but I can’t seem to find the part number to order this plastic pare. Does anyone out there know what I am referring to and if so, does what I am saying…sound like it makes sense as to why ice is not coming out? I hope that there is a knight in shining armor out there to help- me out here !!

Can you rotate the auger manually?

Can you use the reference numbers from the diagram?

Gene.

Yes, I can manualy turn the Auger !! Why did you think that it was stuck or frozen ? It really seems that the only prob;em is the 2 tiered ciup (the drive cup) is split in 2 pieces. I swear I even heard it pop …because it seemed as if the ice was stuck and like a dummy I kept on calling for crushed ice at the door. I don’t know what I was thinking, I just thought it would eventually crack the ice jam and to my dismay something did give but it wasn’t the ice…It was the darn plastic part !! Does this make sense? Infact,if I take out the ice bucket and piece the 2 pieces together (as it should be) I can actually get the ice to come out the door if I call for cubes. It will keep coming until it hits an ice jam where it meets a little pressure then it splits apart and stops. I just don’t know how to open the ice maker itself. Do I just undo the 4 screws onthe bottom sides of the unit and then lift it out…But then is where I get a little worried cause I don’t know how to put the new drive cup in all the way at the back. I have read a lot of horror stories of how people started to open the auger mech. and if they aren’t really careful, it all falls apart. Please a little confidence building is all I need.

Yes, from the diagram you furnished it is part 355

The instructions are attached to the reply.

Thank You Gene…you are one of the special few !! For someone to help another person that you don’t know from a hole in the wall, I can’t tell you how very much that means to me, I really appreciate your spending your time to help me out. All kidding aside, you are one heck of a "Good Person".
Take Care and Be Well. !!

Thank you for your good words and good luck with your refrigerator.

I have to break a part in order to fix the drive cup? Isn’t there another option, without having to buy two parts or the whole ice maker unit?

It just seems odd.

Unfortunately this is the way how GE made it and the above instructions are from GE service manual.

This is a great forum-- it had just what I needed! The drive cup on my ice maker cracked, too. My model looks just a little bit different than the one in the service photos, though, and I was able to pry the assembly apart without cracking the two tabs.

Before prying up the box, I had to unlatch the metal bar that held part of the ice chopping assembly in place (it is really obvious-- just flip the icemaker box over and you’ll see it.

I’m waiting for my drive cup, and then I’ll see if everything fits back together. With my model, though, it appears that you don’t need to break the tabs and then replace the cover.

I have purchased 2 replacement cups and both broke with in weeks. Am I installing it incorrectly?

Hi… I’m sorry to say that I totally understand your frustration. The plastic parts are almost bound to break ( no matter what). I think they are designed that way( sorry to say). In my case, after fixing them 2 times and they both bit the dust, I had to buy an entire new ice maker. Very frustrating…yes …but lesson learned, never by another G E fridge w/ poor quality I’ve maker : (

GE appliances used to be the standard of the industry. Now they are overpriced and garbage. Most likely made in China

I agree 100%

My friend’s GE profile refrigerator isn’t cooling in the fresh foods section, the freezer is fine. We had this problem two weeks ago and a repairman removed the interior panel at the back of the freezer (bottom drawer freezer, not side-by-side), defrosted the coils and told us he’d be ordering a new thermistor and advised to watch for frost building on this panel again - perhaps we’d end up needing a new motherboard, etc. The fridge worked fine until yesterday. Our repairman is unavailable per his phone message. My friend is exceptionally mechanically inclined but for some reason neither of us can remove the back panel of his freezer - it appears to be pretty solidly wedged into place without any way of loosening the right side of the panel. The left side seems to have a finger-hold of sorts… anyways, we could feasibly defrost the coils and keep food from spoiling if we could figure out how to get the panel off. Suggestions?

Try to use a hair dryer to warm up the panel.

This just happened to me as well. Multiple cups within weeks. At $20+ this is going to become very annoying.
