GE Spacemaker XL1800 stopped heating and awful smell

My microwave stopped heating and has an awful, chemical smell going when I tried to heat up some food this morning. The fan still works as does the turntable and light. Any ideas on how/what I should look for to fix it? Thanks.

What is the complete model number of the microwave?

Ok, a little more information as well - it turns out that it does still heat up food. I put some rice in there to see if it would heat up, and it did. But when the rice was in there, it didn’t make any of the buzzing sounds it did before. I took the rice out, and it went right back to the buzzing. Put some more stuff in to heat up, no problem, but when I tried it with nothing in it it makes the buzzing noise.

If I look up in the vent area, it looks like it might be arching inside the unit when it makes the loud buzz sound. I took out the turntable that’s in there and made sure everything was clean, but I still have the problem. I tried to run it without the turntable and still have the problem. I tried to get the gear (not sure what you call that thing that moves the turntable), but it didn’t seem like it wanted to come off. I cleaned it up good and there doesn’t appear to be anything on it, but when I cover it I don’t seem to have the problem.

Any help would be great!

Thanks.

Ok - never really ran it with nothing in it, but just wanted to do some trouble shooting. It seems that as long as we have something in there, it works fine.

What causes it to arc? Is there something I can do to prevent it from doing it again?

After an inspection of the inside, there is a very minor scratch/dent where a very small area of metal is exposed - could that be the problem? Should I paint over that?

Thanks for all the help!

Please see my post from today about my microwave only heating when the vent fan is on.

I would recommend to check the high voltage diode (#77 on the diagram). You can use the test described in one of our previous posts: http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/microwave-repair/19868-diode-testing.html

The door on my kitchen aid under counter dishwasher is stuck closed. Most all my dishes are stuck inside. The lights come on and everything works fine but I can’t open the door.
Repair man wants a fortune to just come out. Can someone help PLEASE

GENE mine does all of the above… but no noise or smell… lights up, turns, counts down but no heat… Let me say my son put a piece of tin foil in 3 weeks ago… I caught it within 5 seconds… but there are burn marks on te door and rear of the inside… It worked fine for 3 weeks and yesterday simply stopped heating. I did the Defrost test. it does NOT cycle on and off like it used to…

Where do you think I am on this? Its a 2005 model. THANKS! Brian

Brian,

Remove the top grill and open the control panel. Disconnect the wires from the high voltage transformer primary windings and check for 120 VAC between them while the control calls for heat.

If there is proper voltage, replace the magnetron.

If there is no proper voltage, then the control board is the culprit.

If you need the correct part number, post the complete model number of the microwave.

Hi, seeing as how you were able to help this person, I’m hoping you can help me too.

It’s kind of ironic because just last week I was thinking to myself how great it is that the microwave has lasted so long. And then 3 days ago, poof! It makes an awful racket, has a weird smell, does not heat, and for whatever reason (apparently my brain was on vacation), I took a bite and my mouth tingled for an hour afterwards. (did not swallow). Still lights up, there is no turn table.

I have a GE Monogram (white)
Model J Em33M 001
Serial # DH964296 S
Manufactured February 1993

Is this something that can be repaired or do I need to buy a new mircrowave.

Thank You!

Everything can be repaired as long as parts are available. The most important two questions are: How much it will cost to fix it and if it’s worth it?

If you really would like to jump in, then you have to have a simple multimeter to diagnose the problem. Let us know when you ready.

I have the same problem with my Kitchen Aid. Trying to find a way to open the door since the plastic thing that unlocks it seems detached.
