I have a GE WBVH6240. It stopped spinning today. I discovered the belt had fallen off. When I opened the Washer service panel, there is fine bick rubber dist everywhere. It is clear the belt has been rubbing for quite some time on the wash drum. I have attempted to put the bel back on, but when I do so, it moves toward the drum, then falls off again. this happens within a few manual turns of the drum. Any help is appreciated.

OK, I taked to parts place this morning, and they were helpful (I think). Basically, he asked if the washer was very loud before it stopped working, I said yes, told him about the belt rubbing, and he said the bearings are shot. He claimed that to replace th bearings on this model meant repalcing the back half of the tub. Estimated cost, $750 (including labor). I guess I’m buying a new washer.

Hey Chris
Sorry to hear about this problem, but you decision to replace the machine sounds like the best course. I would strongly urge you to consider a basic top loader instead of a front loader, in part for reasons you have already experienced.
Good luck with your new machine.
