Kenmore/Whirlpool defrost not cycling

First post - Howdy!

3 days ago I noticed my fridge was running alot, and 2 days ago started reading these posts… Found that the cools were frozen. I defrosted it manually, and plugged it back in and ran it overnight. It cooled fine, but runs constantly (does not shut off, and does not go into defrost mode. The coils are starting to frost up again.

Based on what I’ve read, it sounds like a defrost timer. However, the Sears website, and my local parts store indicate there is not a defrost timer.

Not sure what needs replaced.
Any ideas?

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too. The evaporator will ice up gradually till it goes into defrost, so that is normal. If it doesn’t shut off, check the freezer temp. Should be around 10 degrees. If it is a defrost problem check defrost heater, defrost thermostat. See how to check here-http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control board. You don’t have a timer. It’s been replaced by the control board.

Your control board is part 6. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getSubComp.pd?modelNumber=10656662500&productCategoryId=0165000&brandId=0582&modelName=REFRIGERATOR&diagramPageId=00010&componentDescription=CONTROL%20PARTS&documentId=K0505002&backToLink=Return%20to%20part%20list

Thanks.

I actually just found another post -
"Defrost heater not working"

He said that he doubts its the control board because only one section has failed…?

I’ll try the Defrost Thermostat first.

I unplugged the fridge last night, and this morning the frost had cleared. I changed the defrost thermostat. Its been running for about 3hrs now, and is frosting up again.

?

It is normal for the coils to frost up. It will get thicker and thicker until it is defrosted.

If only one section of your heater has quit working but one sections is working then the heater is your only problem.
If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control board.
