Loud noise and rough stop during spin cycle

Hi, our Maytag washer just recently started making a loud noise during the spin cycle this weekend. The sound almost can be compared to an aiplane motor ramping up. Today my wife said the load of laundry appeared to not spin properly because the clothes were still really wet. I tested the spin cycle and the tub was not moving (this was done by shutting the lid and then opening to see tub stop). I tipped the washer to check to pulley’s and belt. My wife said the tub did start to spin when I was messing underneath. I then tried the spin cycle again and it worked but again made the loud noise. Also my wife mentioned that the tub roughly stops when you lift the lid where she remembered it use to come to a stop with a more gradual spin. I am pretty handy and can fix almost anything with a little guidance. I appreciate any help and advice.

Thanks,
Adam

The most likely problem is that the brakes are messed up in some manner, but that repair requires special tools and good instructions, and I cannot get you the instructions because Maytag will not allow access to its service manuals anymore.

You could try replacing the thrust bearing, this part here

[PART]AP4009132/PART

and that might help. It is not expensive and instructions are included.

So I replaced the thrust bearing and still no dice. I’ve been reading a lot of complaints with this washer series and I’m starting to think we bought a lemon of a series and will be stuck with having to either dump a lot of money into this appliance or buy brand new washer. I just think it is crap when it is only 5 years old.

Well I agree with your frustration., sorry the thrust bearing did not fix it but I think it was worth trying.

Getting into the brake package with your machine involves working with a spring under very high compression which is dangerous, and Maytag recommends special tools.

Ya, the bearing was shot so it was worth replacing.I’ve got an appointment next friday so I guess I’ll wait and find out. Thanks for the advice.

Well for an update: the washer is now leaking under the washer. From other posts it sounds like this will more than likely cost a lot.

Yes, the time to visit Mr. New Washing Machine Store seems to be coming up.

Sorry for your troubles, hope whatever you decide works out.
