Loud noise during spin cycle

Recently our washer has gotten VERY noisy during the spin cycle. Sounds like a jet taking off:eek:. My first thought was that it’s a bad bearing. I’ve removed the front cover, and run the washer. The sound is definitely coming from the transmission. My question is, does the whole transmission have to be replaced or just the bearing(s)?

The price of a new transmission is around $220.00. Even if I do the work myself, seems like I would almost be better off just getting a new washer.

What do you think?

Yes, For a little more money you can get a new, no frills top loader and that is what I think you should do.

@sidfink43… i am experiencing the same problem and have been on here before. i had seen somewhere that one of you recommended a whirlpool toploader w/o all the electronics. do you have any reccomendations? i am looking for at least 4.7 cu. thanks, chet

Hi Chet

To get that large a unit you will probably have to go with a front loader with all sorts of electronics. I can only suggest in that case tha you purchase the extended warranty.

The basic top loaders are 3.2 cu ft and up, but I don’t know that you can get one as large as you need.

thanks sid, if i drop down to the 4.3 range could you suggest something? then again my bggest concern would bebeing able to wash a queen sized comforter. would a 4.0 handle that? what do you think? thanks, chet

I am not that conversant with current models, (they haven’t had time to break yet) so I can only say if you can find a top loader in that size made by any one of the top manufacturers (GE, Whirlpool/Maytag or Frigidaire) without electronics I would go for it.

sorry to hijack this. just found this model WTW4950XW. what do you think? just saw your last post. thanks again, chet

That is probably as close as you are going to come to what you want. It has some electronics, here is what the control unit is

AP4695588

and I have not worked on that drive train and don’t expect to for a couple of years to come. Whirlpool is going to eliminate their basic direct drive machine and I imagine something like this is what they will go with.

thanks again… the search continues. gettin a headache :frowning:
