Matag washer only agitates on delicate

This machine has gradually gotten so that it will only agitate in the delicate cycle. Everything else works fine in all cycles. The decline happened cycle by cycle over the period of a week. I’m halfway to the agitator, but read another post which mentioned the timer. Also, if & when I do get it fixed, what can I do about rust along the interior edges of the cabinet?

Also, before things started breaking, I was washing some really dirty cleaning rags. Now that I have the agitator off the shaft and have cleaned off all the gunk, I’m wondering if there’s a chance everything will work now. On the other hand, maybe I need to regrease the shaft. Thanks.
