Our Maytag will not spin. It seems to agitate normally otherwise. When in the spin part of the cycle, the agitator seems to rotate slowly (it’s hard to tell because the interlock switch stops the motor when you lift the lid to peer in). It makes an occasional clunk and sounds "labored" the whole time, but it doesn’t spin fast enough to throw fabric softener from the cup at the top of the agitator (not enough centrifugal force, I suspect).
Your thoughts?
Thanks.

You probably have a worn thrust washer above the tranny pulley, order the kit, AP4009132 If you turn the tranny puley in the spin direction, and the tranny will not turn, this confirms it.

How difficult is it to replace these parts? How do I best get access to that area to do the work?
Thanks.

You tilt the washer back to reach the tranny pulley, directions come with the kit. Can be hard to get the last washer in, helps to pry down the shaft with a screwdriver.

Thanks. Got the kit yesterday and it looks relatively simple (we’ll see). Hope this fixes the problem.

When does it make the Clunk noise ?
Have you checked the motor slide platform, and tension spring ?
I’m thinking two possibilities,
- Slipping brake/clutch assembly (most likely).
[part]AP4009132[/part]
[part]AP4373023[/part]
- Stiff/seizing tub bearing assembly(least likely).
[part]AP4025154[/part]
Except for the clunk noise, that’s what is making me less confident about the previous parts I listed for you.
I’m going to replace the parts in the first kit you mentioned and try it out. Certainly can’t hurt anything. I’ll report back on the results. The clunking was only very occasional, by the way.
Thanks.

I am working to install the thrust bearing kit, but with all new parts on, when I rotate the pulley either direction, it just spins. There is no resistance to turning and the pulley does not move up or down as it’s supposed to with the cam. The cam just spins with the pulley. Does this point to the need to replace the "Brake Roto?" If so, how difficult is that?
Thanks.
And one more bit of data. Since the pulley spun freely both directions, I was not able to go through the brake disengagement adjustment where you try different washer thicknesses. I could only fit the thin washer on the shaft and manage to install the E-clip. So I just put it back together, set the washer upright, plugged it in and set it to the spin portion of the cycle. When I peered into the tub with a flashlight, it appeared to be agitating. Don’t know if this tells you anything important or not, but…
I would re-post this with the new syptoms, perhaps someone has seen this before, I never have.

Eben,
You don’t have the proper adjustment.
(pay close attention to the top of page 3 in the instruction sheet).
It may take several "adjustments" to get close to the proper cam range, and then "fine" tune it from there.
Most technicians, used to align the arrows and stack the washers, until the E clip slot could barely be seen, then used a small thin blade screw driver to "pry" out on the shaft and set the E clip.
That used to work rather well, you may want to try it ??
I attached the instruction sheet, just in case.
Good Luck,

I wish this person would have followed up and told if they fixed the problem.
Wow. That seems easy enough. Yes the tub will not move at all, its like its frozen there.
Thanks for replying. Ill let you know what happens.
Oh I forgot to ask. If the tub bearing assembly is seized to the transmission, all I have to do to fix that is try to turn the tub by hand while the machine is in the spin cycle? No parts needed?
Hey Joe, I wanted to tell you that I had also posted my question here after replying to this one. I got one answer on it. I hope your solution fixed it though as it’s free :).
Anyway, the other one I was told it was the Thrust bearing kit.
Will see. Ill be back!

Angel, You’ll know what’s what in a couple of minutes. let us know what you find
Joe, I’m so excited. Even my daughter was laughing at me, I was so ecstatic. Your solution worked!!! Yes. Thank you so very much. And it didn’t cost a penny. As soon as I tried to move the tub it took off. To make sure I even marked an on the tub with a permanent marker and sure enough, its working. I believe that we reap what we sow. I got a reaping and yours is coming. Thanks again Joe.

Angel, Great… You’ll be Ok for a few days, but get that thrust bearing kit AP4009132 ordered and installed as soon as possible. Thanks Again,
Ok thanks Joe. So this was only a temporary fix huh? Darn it!!
But at least it gives me a few days to order the part. Thanks!
