Hi
I have been trying to diagnose the issue that I just recently discovered with my Maytag Atlantis Washing Machine (Model # MAV7257AWW).
Everything appears to be working electrically - but the device will not spin or agitate.
I had the washer apart to see what could be wrong with it and here is what I observed:
The belt is on and in place - it seems ok.
The motor is loose, but I cannot seem to tighten it up, as it appears to be designed to move around (there are plastic guides that slide around and cannot be tightened)
The cam on the transmission bearing appears to be OK, but the dust cover was rubbing on the floor and had a hole worn in it. I took the assembly apart and it appears to be OK.
The drum is very difficult to turn manually - which concerns me, but I never took the time to feel it when it was "normal" so I cannot comment.
I have narrowed it down to 3 possible items
1 The Belt is shot
2 I need a thrust bearing kit
3 The Tranny is gone and I should make a planter out of the washer.
Does anybody have any suggestions for me as to how to narrow it down with out just replacing parts?
Thanks in advance
Jonathan
Ok i had to register to reply to your thread but it was alll worth it you made my day.your ahahaaaa moment with the jambed brake was also my ahaaaaaaaa moment. your post was extremely helpfull. i did not need to do anything more than to open the front of my machine and love the top of the brake unit once of twice with a big dead blow mallet. i then turned the drum back and forth once or twice and VIOLA MY WASHER IS NOW SPINNING OUT AGAIN!!! apparently this happens to more than just your maytag washer. I am so gratefull i found your post and i also am very happy you took the time to write up a reply and explain what your solution was. I just like you was warded off by the 200 pound spring warning label, and i didnt get as far as looking up a repair manual but with your help it was totally not necessary thanks a million times and have a freaking awesome weekend!!!

For the record, if you need to pull out the brake housing, you can replace the brake housing screws one at a time with 10-24 - 1 1/2 inch screws, 1 inch longer than the existing ones. This will enable you to release pressure on the spring by symetrically loostening each one without the purchase of the expensive brake release tool!
Saw this thread and I am thinking I have the same problem. My washer won’t agitate, but it will spin. I have taken the transmission cover off and everything looks in place. The bottom pulley will rotate only if I apply a lot of force ( for both directions). Do I need to beat on the brake too?
Seems like your transmission is bad if it will not agitate.
Ok. How do I educate myself on transmission issues? Do you know of any videos or troubleshooting procedures I could view?
Also, can you recommend a replacement/new model?
Thank you!
