washer won't spin or agitate

The drive belt is not broken, it just slips and burns because the brake prevents the transmission from turning. A repairman said the tranmission needed to be replaced at a cost of $500.00 plus, he made this diagnoses with no testing and no mention what so ever about the brake. I removed the enclosure, laid the unit on it’s side and removed the trans. cover. I expected to see some damage and some reason for the problem, instead it was in perfect condition. when I rotated the shaft in reverse everything worked perfectly when I did the same in foreward the brake would engage and stop the rotation. I can remove the small clip from under the drive pulley and disable the brake and everything rotates in either direction fine. The brake is a sealed unit and I have no idea how to determine if it’s bad or not, is their a way to test it? I don’t think the trans. is the problem. Please help, Thank You

If it will agitate find, but will not spin and the motor is turning then it is either the transmission or the brakes that are likely the problem.

It does sound more like the brake is the issue, but I cannot link you to a service manual as Maytag will not let us do this anymore. You will need instructions and a special brake tool to get into this, so I can only suggest you talk to Maytag and see what info they will give you as an owner.

Don’t attempt to get into the brakes without that info, it can be dangerous.

Thank you for your reply, I actually don’t know about the agitator but the rest is accurate, I have already ordered a new brake-clutch assy. I am a mechanic but know little about washers, I can only try to figure out how things work and how they are assembled. I don’t have the special wrench and from what I gather on this site It’s not available, I did manage to remove the old unit using a chain wrench without too much trouble. I think I will be able to reassemble it as well but I am concerned about possible adjustments. I will try to find some text on the subject.

Ok, if you have not seen it already here is the exploded viewe of the brake assembly

Search the Internet for the repair manual; you may find a free download or you may have to pay a nominal fee. Check the auction sites, they frequently have the manuals for these Maytags.

Good luck, and be very careful working with that brake assembly and the brake spring.
